The pictures above speak volumes about this woman (who do you know who looks this great at nine months pregnant?!). She is an artist in every sense of the word. I am fortunate enough to be able to call her “friend”, and have been inspired by her determination and artistry ever since I met her more than ten years ago. We have reconnected as of late, and as usual the creative energy between us was palpable and impossible to ignore. Makkah owns the vintage shop Makkah’s Crushed Velvet in Baltimore, Maryland, where she houses a collection of vintage clothing that span the decades and transcends cultures. Many people may also know her from the Patapsco Flea Market, where she sells the best wares in the entire place. I asked Makkah to allow me to interview her, to share the wonderment that is her, with the world. Behold, Makkah.
Girls of Plenty: Tell me about your store, Makkah.
Makkah: At my store Revolution, we are fashion forward, recession savvy, and absolutely loaded with authentic vintage “couture” garments from the early 1940’s to the late 1970’s. For the contemporary buyers who are not as daring, we have classy, fun, and chic apparel as well.
Girls of Plenty: How many years have you been involved in fashion?
Makkah: Approximately 20 years.
Girls of Plenty:What tips can you give plus size women who may be interested in vintage clothing and thrifting?
Makkah:My advice to curvy divas would be to target the polyesters and jersey knits as they are a lot more giving. Princess cuts and A-lines are fabulous and sensational for the hips. They give you the phenomenal woman appeal. Empire waists are supportive to give you the hour glass figure you deserve regardless of size and shape.
*My tip for the curvy girl who may want to wear vintage clothing but has no idea where to begin, is call Makkah at Revolution Vintage at 443-467-7768. She carries a nice selection of plus size vintage goods in the store. And her accessories and shoe selection is vast (plenty of size 9, 10, and 11s) Wait ’til you see the Hot Pink taffeta skirt and nude snakeskin shoes I got from her store last week! For additional styling tips, visit Makkah’s Facebook Page where she even styles her vintage goods for you. See pics below for additional clothing available at her store.
