I have said this before, especially on Instagram, but I will say it again. Body positivity, age acceptance, dark-skin love, etc. are movements that exist within the confines of social medias. These movements have allowed people to find communities and “safe spaces” of people that will applaud fat, old-age, darker-hued skin, red lips, etc. But the real world is not full of these people. When you walk outdoors, there is no community of people applauding you for being fat; there is no peanut gallery of people saying “Yasssssssss” as you walk down the street. YOU have to be your own hype-woman. YOU have to reassure yourself of all the greatness that exists within you. I promise you, this internal impacts your external, and you walk with your head a little higher, your strut becomes a little sassier, your feet a little lighter.
When I walked down the street to grab some food this day, I knew all eyes would be on me. I mean… a silver jacket topped by a metallic tinsel capelet. I’m aware, lol. While many of the stares were affirming, some looks revealed the shock, disgust, and incomprehensibility that some passers-by experienced. But guess what! I KNEW that I looked good so I could care less what anyone thought. I danced, I sang, all while capturing this on film. I was shining. Literally, but figuratively, too.
